Real Industry Experience – While You Study
At the Academy of Makeup, we believe real-world experience is just as important as classroom learning. That’s why every Diploma of Screen & Media (Specialist Makeup) student has the opportunity to take part in our Industry Work Experience Program, which is one of the most celebrated aspects of our course.
What You’ll Gain
From backstage fashion shows to television sets and creative photo shoots, our students are regularly invited to volunteer their skills across a wide range of events and productions. These are not mock setups. They’re genuine, hands-on opportunities that let you:
• Apply your training in real industry environments
• Work as an Assistant Makeup Artist, supporting PRO Artists on real gigs
• Build a professional portfolio using photos from each job
• Network with photographers, producers, stylists, and potential employers
• Discover what area of makeup artistry you enjoy most – from SPFX to bridal
Many of our graduates secure paid work directly from the contacts and experiences they gain through this program.
Recent Student Opportunities
Our students have been invited to contribute to:
• TV & Media: Channel 7, Rising Pictures, TV Training Academy
• Fashion & Events: Melbourne Fashion Week, Spring Racing Carnival, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
• SPFX & Film: Village Roadshow’s Fright Night, indie films, stage productions
• Editorial & Brands: Kookai, GQ Australia, Intimo, Stay Motivated Fitness, and more
How It Works
• Who participates? All on-campus and online students are eligible
• How many hours? It depends on your course. Diploma students complete 100 hours of industry experience as part of their course
• How are placements arranged? We partner with a wide network of creatives and production companies who request makeup artists for shoots, shows, and events. Our team coordinates these opportunities for eligible students.
Does Work Experience Lead to Paid Jobs?
Yes, often. Many of our graduates are hired by the same teams they first worked with during their course. The relationships you build on set are a direct pathway into paid industry work.
“So many of our students land their first job through work experience. It’s a confidence-builder and a career-starter.” – Emily Walkear, Head Trainer – Melbourne
