SPFX session 1 - Part 1

Welcome to your introduction to the wonderful world of special effects! This first session will go through the tools ad equipment that you will house within your SPFX kit, conducting an allergy test, learning about PAX paints, inks, textures, character storytelling, types of blood and setting up your SPFX station.
 
Ensure that you have read session 1 + 2 of your notes before watching this class.

SPFX session 1 - Part 2

The second session will cover topics including SPFX sensitivities and triggers, highlights and shade and tonal value.

Throughout the entirety of part 2, you covering activity 1, parts 1 - 10. 

 

SPFX session 2 - Part 1

Part one of your second SPFX lesson is a practical introduction to 3D painting. These techniques will not only see you through the next eight weeks of classes but well into the industry.

Today you will be guided through the art of creating realistic scratches and grazes using a select range of grease paints and brushes.  

We will be delving into the topic of working with ingredients that you may already have around your house and the joy of experimenting.

 

SPFX session 2 - Part 2

In part two we’ll discuss in more detail the concept of highlighting and shading while creating 3D stitches. Part two closes with a Q&A about SPFX.

SPFX Burns - Session 5 Part 1

This session begins with a discussion on the topic of burns. Sunburn is a type of burn and this video will show you how to apply realistic sunburn using grease paints in shades of reds and corals, mixing with 99% alcohol.

This video also demonstrates moulding blisters with gel effects, so that you ready for the next step of creating a third degree burn.

Tools + Equipment needed

SPFX kit: latex, flesh effects and scar gels, assorted Ben Nye crème wheels and alcohol palettes. SPFX brushes, cotton tips, tissues and various consumables.

SPFX Burns - Session 5 Part 2

This video demonstrates creating third degree burns on the forearm. The trainer begins a conversation regarding gelatine and discusses working with a variety of different SPFX products to produce realistic injuries.

We also use Ben Nye crème wheels or alcohol activated palettes (if available) to colour your burn in shades of maroons, corals, reds and browns.

These realistic burns are created by layering gel effects products and latex to create texture on top of your model’s skin. The burn is completed with wax edges, painting and adding black coloured tissue to give the effect of charcoaled skin.

Description

This session opens with a discussion relating to the topic of 3D sculpting with Ben Nye nose and scar wax. The lesson focusses on a small laceration that is moulded onto the hand and sculpted into shape with a variety of easy to find tools including toothpicks and a spatula.

A laceration is a deep cut or tearing of your skin. Accidents with knives, tools, and machinery can all cause lacerations. This video also demonstrates moulding wax edges to ensure that your laceration looks realistic, blending wax into the skin, sealing and colouring.

Description

This session focusses on scarring. Scars will either end up being raised or depressed, depending on how the injury occurred and how it heals. Scars will initially be deep purple and lessen in colour over time until they are whitish in appearance.

This video opens with a demonstration of depressed scar created with rigid collodian. It is followed by a demonstration of a keloid scar sculpted with nose and scar wax and applied to the elbow.
This session continues with a cut created out of nose and scar wax, sealed with plastic sealer and coloured with Ben Nye cremes that have been diluted with alcohol. To finish this cut off, stiches and blood effects are applied to the hand.  

This session concludes with an introduction to grazing.

Description

This session concludes the demonstration of wax grazing that was applied in session 102 (part 2). Grazes or minor abrasions occur on any part of the skin, often from falling over or having a rough surface come in contact with the skin.

This grazing is sealed with plastic sealer, coloured with Ben Nye cremes before blood effects are added as a final touch.

Description

This session focusses on the creation of a character using Ben Nye nose and scar wax to build realistic injuries. When working with nose and scar wax it’s important to remember the following; work with your wax while it is soft and keep baby wipes and alcohol close at hand.

Before beginning to create any SPFX character, you must ask yourself: how, where, when and why did the injuries occur? The effects created in this video include a bullet hole and several other cuts and wounds. A wound is an injury in which the skin or other external surface is torn, pierced, cut or otherwise broken.

Description

In this second video from session 103, the SPFX character is completed by colouring the wax wounds with Ben Nye creams that have been diluted with 99% alcohol. A black eye is added, along with a bloody nose created by using both thick and runny bloods.

Bloods are one of the most important components of a SPFX makeup kit. SPFX makeup artists carry a variety of bloods in their kits, including runny bloods, mouth-safe bloods, opaque bloods ad translucent bloods (and so much more).

Description

In this third and final video from session 103, students are guided through the safe removal of special effects makeup.

When removing SPFX makeup on your clients you must always keep their safety at the forefront of your mind. For comfortable removal, it is suggested that hot towels and coconut oil are used.

Hair Styling - Session 1 Part 1

Welcome to your introduction to Hair Styling! This session will cover all hair styling tools and equipment that are required in your hair kit. It will also delve into sectioning hair and trimming step by step.

Please Note: You must read your hair notes before commencing.

 

 

Hair Styling - Session 1 Part 2

Part 2 covers how to blow dry hair after completing trimming. You will be blow drying, with the aim to add volume. You will complete this session with teasing and back combing.

 

Hair Styling - Session 1 Part 3

In this session, you will begin with hair styling using a flat iron. You will learn how to create a sleek pony tail, different ways to tie a pony tail, curling with your flat iron, different braiding techniques and understanding different hair types.

  • Setting with hot rollers, dos and don’ts.
  • Demonstration of a classic (Hollywood) wave using hot rollers.
  • Curling with a tong, different directions, patterns.
  • Demonstration of a classic (Hollywood) wave with tongs.
  • Demonstration of a tight ‘editorial’ curl using a small conical.

Hair Styling - Session 1 Part 4

In Session 4, you will be learning how hair styling reflects different face shapes, as well as an array of ways to complete different up-styles. 

  • Slicked back catwalk/red carpet look (Gigi Hadid met gala 2018 look) with an explanation on how to make it work for different face shapes and hair textures.
  • Messy chignon, working with texture that was built in from the previous curling class.
  • Turning the first slicked back look into a couple of sleek modern up styles, talking about experimentation.
  • A list of people to follow on social media for good hair inspiration.
